MONTAGUE — Residents are hot about what’s been happening with the curbside trash and recycling pickup during the recent cold snap.

In response, the Selectboard met with a representative from Republic Services, the national company with local curbside trash and recycling services for the town, to complain. Much of what Republic’s Dan Higgins offered in response mirrored a statement released by the company regarding Montague area residents’ displeasure with trash not being picked up because of two consecutive weeks of freezing temperatures and intermittent winter precipitation.

“With the holidays and recent extreme weather conditions, some residential service delays have occurred over the past week,” read the statement. “We have implemented plans with additional resources to service our local collection routes, while we work tirelessly to get caught up. Republic Services is deeply committed to the safety of our drivers and the communities we serve. We appreciate our customers’ patience during this time and we remain committed to providing quality service to the local communities we are fortunate to serve.”

The Town of Montague Facebook page was filled with comments from disgruntled residents starting on New Year’s Eve, when the page announced trash pickup would be delayed.

On Jan. 2, the page posted the following notice from town officials:

“We understand that trash/recycling was not picked up on many roads today, including all of Montague Center. We are just as frustrated as you and are looking for an explanation. We will keep you posted about the contractor’s plan to fix this. For now, we suggest leaving bins out overnight in case they do a pickup early tomorrow morning.”

In the beginning of December, Montague shifted some of the trash routes to better distribute the volume of trash throughout the neighborhoods, but according to Town Administrator Steve Ellis, the company recently fell behin d.
