Nominations are now being accepted for the Greenfield Recorder’s 37th Citizen of the Year award.

The winner will be a person in Franklin County who works to improve the community, who is altruistic, and who gives his or her talents to others but may not be recognized for it.

A $500 prize is on the line, half of which will be donated to a charity of the winner’s choice, and the other $250 given as a cash prize for the citizen of the year. The winner will also be the guest of honor at a breakfast hosted by the Recorder and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

The bar was set high by the 2018 citizen of the year, David Chichester, an 81-year-old Greenfield resident who had served in no fewer than 10 volunteer roles since his retirement in 1994 from an insurance company.

To name a few, Chichester had served on the governing boards of the New England Center for Women in Transition, the Baystate Franklin Medical Center, the Arena Civic Theatre and the Pioneer Valley Symphony. In Conway, where Chichester lived before moving to Greenfield, he had helped develop programs for public health and emergency management, and had been on the Planning Board and Board of Health.

“The thing I find compelling about Dave is the length of time and the range of stuff he’s done, and his quiet impact on this community without any big fanfare,” said Mary McClintock, who had nominated Chichester for the award and had worked with him on the Conway Planning Board and through Community Action Pioneer Valley.

Award recipients prior to Chichester include: Robert Pura, of Greenfield, in 2017; Ann Hamilton, of Greenfield, in 2016; Cliff Fournier, of Orange, in 2015; and Marie Putala, of Turners Falls, in 2014.

To nominate someone for the award, write to the Recorder at P.O. Box 1367, Greenfield, MA, 01302-1367; or to Editor-in-Chief Joan Livingston at jlivingston@recorder.com. Include your name, address, phone number and email, and the same information for the person you are nominating. Also give a short written statement about why your nominee should be Citizen of the Year; note any charities, clubs or offices he or she has participated in.

Nominations are due by Dec. 2.
