Wondering what to do with that Christmas tree now that it’s 2025? Well, at least two Franklin County entities have programs in place to take those festive symbols off your hands.

The Greenfield Department of Public Works will remove Christmas trees left curbside all this month and the Orange Fireman’s Relief Association will collect them this Saturday morning. There is no charge for Greenfield’s service, whereas the Orange one comes with a $5 suggested donation.

“Generally, the residents of Greenfield put Christmas trees, free of ornaments and tinsel, on the curb on a collection day and we will collect the trees throughout the month of January,” said Lindsey Knapp, Greenfield DPW’s office manager. “We do our best to collect them on trash days, but sometimes it doesn’t work out, depending on staff those days.”

The department will remove trees using vehicles other than its garbage trucks. DPW Director Marlo Warner II said this service has been provided for at least 20 years.

Christmas trees can also be brought to the Greenfield Transfer Station — where the DPW brings the ones it collects — at no charge for Greenfield residents. There is a $10 charge for non-residents. The Transfer Station is open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays until Jan. 18, at which point the hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Anyone with questions can contact the DPW at 413-772-1528 or DPW@greenfield-ma.gov.

“The [Orange Fire] Department has been doing this about 10 years. It’s been one of their staple fundraisers,” firefighter Mark White said.

The donations are put toward purchasing equipment to help ease the burden on taxpayers, providing scholarships for students graduating from Ralph C. Mahar Regional School, hosting a free yearly steak dinner for retired Orange firefighters, and providing assistance to local charities and events.

Volunteers in Orange will collect discarded trees on Saturday, Jan. 11. Anyone interested in the service should make arrangements by sending an email to ofdtreepickup@gmail.com. People are asked not to call the Fire Department with questions. Like in Greenfield, all discarded trees must be free of decorations and lights.

White said the collected trees will be taken to either a local beagle club to serve as shelter for rabbits or to a local farm for livestock to eat. He said people have always been generous and appreciative for the service.

“Christmas trees [are] one of those hard things,” he said. “It’s not something you can throw in your trunk.”
