MONTAGUE — Looking to get rid of this year’s Christmas tree before it becomes a fire hazard? As they do every year, crews from the town’s Department of Public Works will provide complimentary curbside pickup from now until Jan. 18.

”We do this as a courtesy for the residents,” said Foreman Dick Clough. “I’ve been here for 30 years, and we’ve been doing this every year I’ve been here.”

Trees will be transformed through a wood chipper into mulch, which the Department of Public Works puts down along town roadways.

All tress left outside will be picked up Monday through Thursday, with the exception of holidays. Clough said residents “can also take them themselves, if they prefer, to the recycle center.” After Jan. 18, residents must take trees to the recycling center themselves.

Clough noted that trees can’t be burned without a permit.

The Montague Recycling Center at 11 Sandy Lane is accepts retired Christmas trees Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon.
