“It Can’t Happen Here” Auditions: Play about the election of a fascist American president, his ensuing crushing of civil rights and the underground rising against him by a Vermont editor and his family and friends. Josh Platt of Greenfield is directing. Auditions will be held at the Belding Memorial Library, 344 Main St. (Route 112), in Ashfield from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, and from 6 to 8 pm. on Monday, Jan. 29. Auditioners may attend either audition. They will work from the script: no preparation or experience is necessary. Those unable to make these times can set up another audition by contacting Jackie Walsh at 413-625-9413 or: itcanthappenhereashfield@gmail.com. A large, diverse ensemble is needed, ages 20 and up. The play runs May 18, 19, 20, 25 and 26 in Ashfield. The company also needs help on set design, set construction, lighting, publicity, hair and house managing.

Call for Entries, Small Works Exhibit and Sale: Take part in a community exhibit hosted by Sawmill River Arts Gallery, next to the Book Mill in Montague Center. Exhibit dates are Feb. 1 through 26, with reception Sat., Feb. 3, from noon to 3 p.m. A non-juried show of original, 2- and 3-dimensional visual art, any medium. Maximum size is 10 inches in any direction, including frame. Entry fee is $5 per artwork. Artists may submit up to two pieces; at least one will be exhibited. The first 80 artists will be included. Hilltown Variety Show: Have a unique talent? The First Congregational Church of Ashfield invites you to be a part of the fun and light up the newly renovated sanctuary and performance space. The show will happen Saturday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. To participate, come show us what you’ve got at an audition on either Saturday, Jan. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m., or Wednesday, Jan 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. Call organizer Jeannine Haas for a time slot or just show up during one of the audition times and we will fit you in. We will have one required rehearsal on Friday, Feb. 9, before the show. Auditions and the show will take place at First Congregational Church of Ashfield, 429 Main St. (Route 116 across the street from Town Hall).
