GREENFIELD — A new playground awaits campers when Camp Kee-wanee opens for the summer on June 30.
The day camp at 1 Health Camp Road had the equipment installed last fall and held a launch party on May 3.
“It was exciting because we had our older campers … and little campers, and everybody’s able to utilize it,” said Sherry Wood, who serves as co-executive director with her husband, Ron.
Wood explained the camp had been raising money for the playground for 12 years.
“We had fundraised, and then we finally had some money in our budget and we were going to do it, and then COVID came,” she said, explaining that the saved money then went to other bills and expenses. “Thank God we did it last year, for so many reasons.”
The project ended up costing $110,000. Fortunately for the camp, an anonymous private donor who has regularly donated camp scholarships contributed a large portion.
The old playground has been demolished.
“It was built in the ’70s, and it was one of those backyard ones,” Wood said.

The new playground includes a climbing wall, two slides and a spiral carousel.
Camp Kee-wanee, also called the Greenfield Health Camp, celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. The camp opened in 1924 when a nurse, Anna Cook, began a sleep-away camp for sick children to be fed and learn about health. It now hosts roughly 100 children of all ability levels.
The camps consists of two three-week sessions. It closes for the summer on Aug. 9.
