Freedom Credit Union offers tips to save on gas

SPRINGFIELD — Freedom Credit Union recently launched a new checking account and rewards system, Advantage Checking, powered by BaZing, that allows members to save 10 cents per gallon on up to 20 gallons of gas per month by using their Advantage Checking debit card for everyday purchases.

Once members enroll in fuel benefits using the BaZing app, they earn fuel savings for every 15 debit card swipes per month. In addition, for a limited time, Freedom Credit Union is offering a $25 gas gift card to anyone who opens a new Advantage Checking account. Other benefits include 24/7 roadside assistance, a health savings card, cellphone protection, identity theft aid, discounts at local and national retailers, and more.

Freedom Credit Union’s two Franklin County branches are at 74 Main St. in Greenfield and 191 Avenue A in Turners Falls.

More tips from Freedom Credit Union for saving on gas:

■Download an app, like GasBuddy, that tracks gas prices to find the lowest local option. Mobile navigation apps, like Waze or Google Maps, also provide gas prices. Also, turn on “fuel efficiency” when using Google Maps to find the most fuel-efficient routes to destinations.

■Enroll in the rewards program of a major gas station chain, such as Shell, BP or ExxonMobil. Be sure to check the terms to see what percentage of gas spending is given back. Discount stores like Costco and BJ’s also offer discounted gas prices for their members.

■Check to see if the gas station offers a discount for purchases paid in cash.

■Get better gas mileage by ensuring your car is in good repair. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that properly inflated tires can boost gas mileage by 3%. In addition, stay up to date with oil changes and have filters, spark plugs, coils, nozzles, sensors and struts regularly checked and cleaned or replaced to ensure the best possible fuel efficiency.

■Consider ridesharing, public transportation, or biking or walking as alternatives to driving.
