Bulletin board: Massachusetts shotgun deer hunting season gets underway in Franklin County

The post-Thanksgiving Day winds kicked off opening day of the Massachusetts Shotgun Deer Hunting season on Monday in Franklin County.

Charlemont’s Nicholas Johnston bagged the largest deer reported in the area, as his nine-point buck weighed in at 185 pounds at Gould’s Sugarhouse in Shelburne Falls. Northfield’s Dylan Fisher was right behind with an 183-pound buck checked at Bitzer Hatchery in Montague.

Here’s a list of the deer reported to the Recorder from Day 1 of the season.

Sawmill River 10K

Registration for the annual Sawmill River 10K is underway. 

The race is scheduled for Jan. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. near the Village Common on Main Street in Montague. Race day registration will begin at 9 a.m. at Montague Common Hall. The entry fe e is $35 if paid before Dec. 31 and $45 after. Hot and cold refreshments will be provided.
