Bulletin board: FCHA 8U Green hockey team wins Mites Jamboree in Auburn, Maine

A dominant weekend in Maine led to a tournament championship for the Franklin County Hockey Association 8U Green team.

FCHA went a perfect 8-0 over the course of two days to win the Mites Jamboree in Auburn, Maine, capping the weekend with four victories on Sunday.

Every player on the roster scored at least one goal, while Wyatt Wilkins posted four shutouts as an impenetrable wall between the pipes. FCHA allowed just five goals the entire tournament thanks to Wilkins and a stout defensive effort.

“It was nice to see the kids playing as a team,” FCHA head coach Ethan Wilkins said. “They moved the puck well and played excellent two-way hockey.”

FCHA’s roster consists of Charlie Lovett, Hunter Wilkins, Wyatt Wilkins, Sean Winslow, Collin Winslow, Owen Castine and Danielle Zraunig.

K of C Hoop Shoot

Five local youths advanced to the district tournament after leading the pack at the annual Knights of Columbus Hoop Shoot at the Greenfield YMCA over the weekend.

On the girls’ side, Savannah Thomas, Ever Kennedy and Tayler Bergeron all   punched their district tickets thanks  t  o standout performances.

The boys’ winners who will represent Greenfield at districts were Conner Bergeron and Taygen Daignault.

Districts will also be held in Greenfield in February.

Pioneer 58, FC Tech 37 — A big first half enabled the visiting Panthers to capture the independent victory in Turners Falls on Monday night.

Pioneer led 23-7 after one quarter and 45-10 at halftime en route to the win.

“They shot the ball extremely well in beginning of the game,” Franklin Tech coach Tim Artus said of Pioneer. “We came out flat, and really just had less energy than we needed to be able to keep up.”

Brayden Thayer led the Panthers (7-1) with 13 points, draining three 3-pointers, while Kurt Redeker scored 11 points, Alex McClelland added 10 and Josh Wood registered nine.

Franklin Tech (2-9) was paced by Ty Sadoski’s 17 points, with Gabe Mota tossing in nine points.

Greenfield 69, Smith Academy 49 — Another balanced scoring effort powered the Green Wave to an impressive victory on Monday at Nichols Gymnasium in Greenfield.

Jackson Campbell led all scorers with 20 points, 17 coming in the second half for Greenfield (6-2). Jon Breor followed with 16 points, while Petru Cojocaru (9 points), Caleb Thomas (8), Caleb Murray (7) and Jacob Blanchard (7) all made key offensive contributions.

Smith Academy (8-3) received 12 points apiece from Greg Stone and Riley Intrator.

Greenfield, which led 31-21 at halftime, stays home to play Mahar on Thursday.
