Bulletin Board: High turnout early in Mass. shotgun deer hunting season

As we enter Day 3 of the Massachusetts shotgun deer hunting season, locals have returned to the area’s checking stations in strong numbers after the pandemic slowed things to a halt in 2020.

Here’s the list of deer checked locally over the first two days of the week (some opening day information from Monday is included here as it was unavailable at press time for inclusion in Tuesday’s paper):

Basketball

Union 38 rec

The recreation departments of Conway, Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately are offering a recreational basketball program for both boys and girls grades 7-9, with players from all towns combining to form teams. 

Practices begin in December with games being played on Saturdays beginning Jan. 8 and ending March 12. The last day to register will be at the skills assessment, which is Dec. 9 at the Sunderland Elementary gymnasium at 7:30. The cost to register is $60.

Colleges

Wozniak honored

After another big week on the ice, Turners Falls’ Cassidhe Wozniak was rewarded for her efforts with the Worcester State women’s hockey team.

The junior was named the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance (ECHA) Co-Player of the Week after helping the Lancers to a 2-0-0 record. Wozniak picked up five points on one goal and four helpers.

Wozniak notched one goal and two assists in Worcester’s 7-0 victory over Rivier University and added two assists, including a secondary assist on the game-winning goal in a 4-1 win over Anna Maria on Sunday after noon.
