Baseball

Junior Legion

Greenfield Post 81’s Junior Legion team traveled out to Middleboro High School to compete in the Massachusetts American Legion Department Junior Tournament, where it went 0-2 over the weekend.

Post 81 opened things up on Saturday against Pittsfield, where it suffered a 12-2 loss. On Sunday, playing in an elimination game against Middleboro, Caleb Thomas was dealing on the mound, going seven-and-two-thirds innings on the mound to force extras with the game tied, 1-1.

Thomas was pulled after he hit his pitch count and Post 81 was unable to get the winning run across, with Middleboro walking the game off in the ninth to knock Greenfield out of the double-elimination tournament.

Luca Siano had the lone RBI on the day for Post 81.

“We played very well on Sunday,” Greenfield coach Alex Siano said. “The Middleboro pitcher pitched an excellent game and we couldn’t get that timely hit. We were solid all day on defense. A bounce here or there and it’s a different game. That’s baseball – sometimes it doesn’t go your way.

“On Saturday we played a very strong and well coached Pittsfield team,” Siano continued. “You have to really be on your game to play with them. We got off to a slow start and never really recovered. The kids kept fighting but it was an uphill battle.”

It wasn’t the ending Post 81 dreamed up but it was a a successful season for the club, achieving its goal of qualifying for the state tournament while going 11-5 during the regular season and earning a win over Belchertown in the District 3 playoffs.

"Overall it was a great experience,” Alex Siano said. “It was a lot of fun coaching this team this summer. We have a lot of kids coming back. You never know, maybe next year it goes our way.”
