Bulletin board: Matt Bassett wins 1st Northfield Road Race

It was a good start to the summer for Matt Bassett.

Bassett won the first race in the Northfield Summer Road Race Series, completing the 3.3 mile course in 23 minutes, 46 seconds on Thursday evening.

Ashley Randle was the first female finisher and came in second overall with a time of 24 minutes flat. Third place went to Neal Gifford (24:07), followed by Lex Singh (fourth, 24:08) and Tim Relyea (fifth, 25:40). Twenty-four runners completed the course and seven walkers.

The 3.3-mile race takes place every Thursday from June until August, with registration opening at 6 p.m. and the race beginning at 6:30 p.m. The course begins and ends at 105 Main Street in Northfield. The cost is $4 per runner and $10 per family. Prizes are awarded to all who participate. Walkers are welcome and can start the course early or choose a shorter route.

Youth baseball

There are additional sign-ups for the 54th season of the Franklin County Babe Ruth League. All games are played at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield. Players can be between the ages of 13-15, or can turn 16 after January 1, while 12-year-olds seeking experience on a full-size diamond are also eligible to play.

New dates are: June 6 and 8 from 5:30-7 p.m., and June 11 from 10 a.m.-noon at Abercrombie Field.

Youth softball


Samantha Rider and Dani Zraunig were both 3-for-3, lifting Franklin First Federal Credit Union to a 6-4 win over Freedom Credit Union in GGSL Lil’ Nippers Division action on Thursday.

Maple Shippee was 3-for-3 for Freedom and Kamryn Beck had a pair of hits.


Ashfield Thursday league

Bev Williams and Bob Jillson took low honors with a 37 at the Ashfield Community Golf Club’s Thursday morning league.

Taking second with a 41 were Norma Lynch and Cyndie Stetson.

K of C League

John O’Riley and Ken Morin had the top point quotas of plus-7 during the Knights of Columbus Golf League at Thomas Memorial on Wednesday.

Rodney Herzig was third at plus-6. Closest to the pin winners were Art Girard (No. 7) and Brian Browning (No. 9), while skins were won by O’Riley (No. 3) and Darren Lenois (No. 4). Bob Wondoloski leads after six weeks of league play at plus-18, followed by Jim Welcome at plus-17.

Thomas Women’s League

Jane Smith shot the low gross of 41 while Sherry Demers had the low net of 29 in the Thomas Women’s League on Wendesday. 

Jane Smith won closest to the pin on No. 7 (16 feet). 

Timmons-Messer League

Bill Noyes and Brad Stafford took low gross honors at Wednesday’s Timmons-Messer League at Northfield Golf Club.

Mark Horta and Trevor Blake were second with a 39, while Dan Grybko and Steve Lanciani had the low net (28). Doug Turner and Rich Drozdal won a match of cards for second with a 29.

Closest to the pin winners were Dave Brady (No. 6, 11-6) and Ronnie Parker (No. 7, 10-9), and Noyes was match medalist (39).
