Rowe’s Nick Baker wins final Mt. Institute Ski League race for Deerfield Academy

The final race of the Mount Institute Ski League took place Wednesday at Berkshire East, with Rowe native and Deerfield Academy skier Nick Baker taking first place in the varsity boys slalom race.

Baker earned first with a two-run combined time of 66.40 seconds. Fellow Big Green racers Chip Coffin and Morgan Haisman took second and third, with Coffin finishing with a combined time of 67.40 and Haisman closed behind at 69.91.

DA’s Joe Brown took fifth with a combined time of 73.33 as the Big Green came away with a first-place team finish on the boys side.

The Northfield Mount Hermon boys took third as a team, as Alex McCullough (seventh, 73.76) and Bryan Suh (eighth, 75.36) each earned top 10 finishes.

The entire top 10 on the girls side was split between NMH and Deerfield Academy racers, with the Hoggers narrowly edging out a first place team finish over the Big Green.

NMH’s Olivia Weinstein was the top girl finisher, coming across with a combined time of 73.92 seconds. Deerfield Academy’s Claire Patton settled for a close second (74.54).

The next three placers were all Hoggers, with Izzy Campbell taking third (76.37), Arden Bacon in fourth (79.98) and Hillary Leeds in fifth (83.14).

Ollie McDonald took ninth (90.55) to round out the NMH racers in the top 10.

Lindsay Carey (sixth, 84.05), Liv Del Sarto (seventh, 85.07), Eve Andon (eighth, 87.66) and Josephine Cramer (10th, 90.58) all placed in the top 10 for the Big Green.

Youth Baseball


Greenfield Minor League Baseball registration is now open online and will be available until March 26. There won’t be any in-person registration dates this year due to indoor gathering restrictions.

HFBUA classes

The Hampshire Franklin Baseball Umpire Association (HFBUA) is planning to conduct classes for the 2021 baseball season. The classes will follow all recommended COVID-19 protocols, including the possibility of online instruction.

The association covers umpiring of scholastic baseball for all of Hampshire and Franklin County schools registered under MIAA and several other baseball leagues in the area.
