Nineteen of the top high school runners from throughout Massachusetts were selected to compete in the Tommy Cochary High School Mile in Falmouth on Saturday. Isabel May of Southampton is in the field, and the Northfield Mount Hermon School student will look to make her mark in the prestigious event.

The High School Mile runs in conjunction with the Aetna Falmouth Elite Mile and the New Balance Falmouth Road Race, which take place Sunday.

The race is named after Tommy Cochary, a young Falmouth runner who passed away from a drunk-driving accident in 1990. The race began in 2010 to honor his memory, with the athletes who compete in it not just selected for their athletic abilities, but because they embody and show spirit of an active life, have a fun-loving attitude and have shown they have made smart decisions with their life.

All of the runners are part of extracurricular activities, as well as being involved in their communities.

May, who is entering her senior year at Northfield Mount Hermon, is a talented runner, posting a 5 minute, 6 second time on the outdoor 1,500-meter run, as well as a time of 11:15 in the 3,000-meter outdoor run. She has also run an outdoor cross country 5,000-meter race in 20:01.

Both the boys and girls winner in the mile will have a grant of $2,500 awarded to their school in their name to be used to implement changes to the athletics or wellness of the school. This may include new uniforms, equipment or after-school wellness activities.

May is one of 10 female runners competing for the prize, with Makayla Paige of Tewksbury and Kate Connolly of Natick the early favorites.

It’s the first time both are running the race, with Connolly’s sister, Grace, winning the past two years. Connolly is the Massachusetts Division 2 champion in the indoor 2-mile, while Paige is ranked No. 1 in the state in both the 800 meters and 400-meter hurdles, and ranked No. 9 nationally in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06:27.

The race begins at 4 p.m. at the James Kalperis Track in Falmouth.
