Bulletin Board: FC Babe Ruth meeting tonight

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League will holds its March meeting tonight.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. on the first floor conference room at St. Kazimierz Society on Avenue A in Turners Falls.

Topics to include: 2019 registration dates and locations, season beginning and ending dates, championship and playoff dates, the league’s 50th year anniversary. Parents of players aging out of Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken programs will be able to address board members with any questions.

FCHA Squirts cruise

Behind a hat trick from Luca Siano, FCHA GSB Squirt Green cruised into the playoffs behind a 9-1 win over Holy Name White in Greater Springfield League action Sunday at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.

FCHA now heads to the GSL playoffs as the No. 3 seeds in the 10U South Division.

Siano scored three times to pace the team’s offensive cause Sunday, while Chase Zraunig buried a pair of goals in the victory. Shawn Baumann, Shawn Beckwith, Jack Laurie and Carter Schloat all added goals.

Baumann, Schloat, Caedmon LeBlanc and Laurie all recorded two assists, with Siano, Stefan Flaska and Braedon Talbot adding single helpers.

Defensive efforts by Vincent Grima and Dominic Sarno helped goaltender Wade Bardwell nab the win, as he recorded 12 saves in net.


UM lax blasts Lowell

The University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse defense stymied UMass Lowell throughout play at Garber Field on Tuesday en route to a 14-4 victory over the visiting River Hawks.

Freshman attack Gabriel Procyk and position-mate Devin Spencer totaled hat tricks, while Procyk chipped in one assist for a game-high-tying four points. Trainor also had four points on a goal and three assists.

Massachusetts (4-3) received multi-point outing from five more Minutemen as the offense shared the ball consistently throughout the game. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin had three points on a pair of scores and one assist. Freshman midfielder Scott Del Zotto and Paparo also posted two goals apiece while junior attack Nick Roy dished out two assists.

Philpott, a redshirt junior two-way player, added an assist, as did rookie midfielder Kevin Cutinella.

Goalie Sean Sconone was steadfast in net as the senior turned aside nine shots and only allowed a pair of goals in nearly 54 minutes of action before sophomore Hampton Brannon rotated into the lineup in cage.

Senior Isaac Paparo led the defensive effort in front of Sconone with a pair of caused turnovers and seven groundballs as the group limited UMass Lowell to just eight shots in the first half and 23 total on the day.

Midfielders Charlie O’Brien (3), Billy Philpott (2) and Jeff Trainor (1) added a combined six caused turnovers.

UMass hosts Utah Sunday at noon. The Utes (4-2) are a first-year Division I program.
