Bulletin Board: NMH Hoggers sweep Mt. Institute ski competition

It was a clean sweep for the Northfield Mount Hermon School ski teams Wednesday afternoon.

The Hoggers placed first in both the boys and girls’ races, as the Mount Institute Ski League held its fourth race of the season at Berkshire East Mountain Resort in Charlemont.

The boys’ team finished with 260 points, edging runner-up Deerfield Academy (246 points) and third-place Eaglebrook School (217). The Hoggers were led by a 1-2 finish individually, as Aran Zecha won the two-run giant slalom race in 1 minute, 15.64 seconds. Isaac Foster was the runner-up just over a second behind, crossing in 1:16.82.

DA had three consecutive finishers take the 3-4-5 spots. Garrett Alexander was third for the Big Green (1:16.85), Achille Sarachek took fourth (1:16.99) and JP Patton was fifth (1:17.92).

NMH won the girls’ race with 217 points, holding off runner-up Mohawk Trail Regional High School (199) and third-place DA (191).

Deerfield’s Kikka Guidici captured first overall in the GS, crossing in 1:18.73, while Mohawk’s Ashley LaCross nabbed runner-up honors in 1:20.22.

DA’s Valerie Hetherington wound up third overall (1:21.21), followed by fourth-place Taylor Loomis (1:21.82) and fifth-place Erin Laffond (1:23.58). Both Mohawk skiers that made it three Warriors in the top five.

Deerfield results

Phillips Andover Academy scored three goals in the third period, coming back from a 1-0 deficit to capture a 3-1 win over Deerfield Academy in boys’ varsity hockey action Wednesday afternoon.

Deerfield took a 1-0 lead with 3:33 left in the second period, scoring on a power-play goal from the point. But Andover tied the game early in the second and scored the eventual game-winner on a power play strike with 9:42 to play.

• In other DA action Wednesday, the girls’ varsity hockey team picked up a 1-0 win over Winchendon School while the girls’ squash team fell to Andover, 4-3, and the girls’ basketball team fell to Kimball Union Academy, 73-59.

Youth basketball

Pioneer Suburban

Jayden Fox scored 19 points, while Jalen McGraw joined him in double figures with 13 as Pioneer defeated Southampton, 84-56, in a grades 7 and 8 Suburban League boys’ basketball game Monday.

Trey Fraser tossed in 7 points in the victory for Pioneer, which puts the team at an impressive 13-1 overall.

• In other weekend action, Pioneer fell to South Hadley, 60-51, on Sunday in a matchup of undefeated teams at the time.

Fox led the way with 18 points, followed by Joey Brook with 15 points and Ryan Potter with 10 points.

• The weekend opened with a 72-56 win over Northampton, as Fox had his first of what wound up being three double-digit scoring outings thanks to a 19-points effort.

Brook was right behind with 17 points, followed by Potter with 12 points.
