Bulletin Board: Hoggers sweep Mt. Institute Ski League opener

Northfield Mount Hermon School made it a clean sweep during the first Mt. Institute Ski League race of the season, winning both the girls’ and boys’ varsity races Wednesday afternoon at Berkshire East Ski Resort in Charlemont.

The Hoggers finished with 266 points to win the six-team boys’ race as Aran Zecha came in second overall with a two-run combined slalom run time of 71.05. Teammate Nils Skaane was third overall in 71.62, Lane Henry placed fifth in 72.47, Isaac Foster finished sixth in 72.73, and Jay Mahoney took eighth in 75.31.

Eaglebrook School came in second with 230 points. Eaglebrook was led by Nate Hazen, who finished seventh in 74.20, while teammates Granger Savage (75.55) and Nick Baker (77.15) finished ninth and 10th. Deerfield Academy finished fourth as a team with 207 points and was led by boys’ individual champion Achille Sarachek, who finished in 69.64. Mohawk Trail Regional High School also competed and finished sixth with 141 points.

NMH also won the girls’ race with 217 points. Heidi Leeds was the top finisher for the Hoggers with a fifth-place finish in 78.83. Gemma Borra Paley was sixth in 78.95, Izzy Campbell was seventh in 79.93, and Mairead Collins came in ninth in 84.08.

Deerfield came in second overall as a team with 196 points as Kikka Giudici cruised down the hill and finished first in 68.12 to beat the rest of the field by seven-plus seconds. Teammate Valerie Hetherington took second in 75.40.

Mohawk placed third with 172 points, with Ashley Lacross finishing third overall in 76.29, and Taylor Loomis in eighth at 82.17.


Jack Loran and Sean Heffron scored Wednesday to lead NMH to a 2-1 win over Berkshire School in a boys’ prep hockey game in Sheffield.

NMH is now 12-2-2 on the season and ranked seventh in New England.

• In girls’ action, NMH scored a pair of third-period goals to defeated Deerfield, 2-1, on Wednesday.

The game was scoreless until the third period when NMH got on the board when Ally Watrous scored on the power play with 8:28 to play in the game on assists from Melissa Alexander and Ellie Fellows.

The Lady Hoggers went up 2-0 with 5:12 to play as Nicole Unsworth scored on a breakaway, assisted by Ally Nolan. Deerfield got on the board with 2:28 to play when Mae Emerson scored on a rebound.

NMH goalie Amanda Aalto turned aside 28 shots to earn the win in net.


Pioneer 5/6 wins

Gavin Gammell notched 18 points to lead Pioneer to a 47-33 win over Williamsburg in a grades 5 and 6 Suburban League boys’ basketball game Wednesday night at Anne Dunphy School in Williamsburg.

Jake Brook added 13 points and had a nice defensive game. Josh Wood chipped in 10 points.

Jesse Connors paced Williamsburg with 15 points.

GMS girls fall

Amber Bergeron scored 17 points Tuesday but the Greenfield Middle School girls’ basketball team dropped a 32-17 decision to Frontier Middle School.

Brie Widelo and Josie Cloutier both played well defensively for Greenfield. Greenfield is now 2-2.

No Frontier stats were reported.

Frontier 5/6 wins

Madison McKemmie scored 8 points and had four steals to lead Frontier to a 26-21 win Sunday over Southampton in a grades 5 and 6 Suburban League girls’ basketball game in South Deerfield.

Lilly Warchol had 6 points and two steals.

• On Saturday, McKemmie had 14 points and three steals and Frontier edged Easthampton, 24-20.

Brianna Hale had a solid all-around game with 4 points, three steals and seven rebounds.

KOC Hoop Shoot

The Greenfield Knights of Columbus Council 133 will hold its Hoop Shoot at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Greenfield YMCA.

The competition is open to all girls and boys in Franklin County between the ages of 9 and 14 as of Jan. 1. Age group winners will advance to the District Championships in February also at the Greenfield YMCA.

Registration begins at 3 and the competition takes place immediately after.
