Bulletin board: UMass women’s basketball edged by Fordham

The UMass women’s basketball team fell behind early against Fordham and could not complete a comeback bid in a 69-64 loss on Saturday at the Mullins Center in Amherst.

UMass went on a 20-9 run to close out the third quarter to get back into the game.

The Minutewomen (16-8, 6-5 A-10) received a team-high 21 points from Sam Breen. 

Breen hit a 3-pointer to make the score 67-64 late in the fourth but UMass could not get closer down the stretch. 

Bre Hampton-Bey (11 points) and Destiney Philoxy both scored 11 points for the Minutewomen. 

Middle schools

Morgan Softic and Jayden Delgado carried the Mahar Regional Middle School boys basketball team to a 29-25 win over Hopkins Academy in Hadley on Saturday.

Softic and Delgado both scored 13 points for the Senators.

Mahar travels to Pioneer for a game today at 3:30.

Suburban League

The Greenfield 7th and 8th grade Suburban League team split a pair of games over the weekend. 

Greenfield lost at home, 51-37, at home against Ludlow on Saturday. 

Jackson Campbell led the way with 20 points on on six 3-pointers. Jerry Ven scored five points and corralled 11 rebounds. 

Corbin Frost (four points), Caleb Thomas (three points) and Nico Fasulo (three points) chipped in offensively. Jonathan Breor led Greenfield with 12 rebounds.

Greenfield bounced back on Sunday with a 60-55 win over Hampshire at the Norris School in Southampton.

Breor had a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Jacob Blanchard notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. 

Campbell scored 16 points, connecting on four buckets from long range. Hugh Cyhowski scored nine points and added five rebounds, while Fasulo led Greenfield with five assists.

Ven added nine rebounds for Greenfield. Grayson Thomas played well on defense with three steals. 

Pioneer 64, Hampshire 62 – The Panthers 7th and 8th grade team won on the road in Southampton on Friday night. 

Josh Wood led Pioneer with 24 points. Brayden Thayer scored 17 points with Gavin Gammell adding 12.

Youth Hockey

FCHA 

FCHA Squirt Green beat the Pioneer Valley Lightning, 5-1, on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Rink in Holyoke.

Nolan Kalinowski (assist), Desmond Drake, Wayde Bardwell , Chase Zraunig, Logan Tyler all found the net for FCHA. 

Sam Bucala added a helper with Nico Siano picking up the win in net. 

On Sunday, FCHA picked up a 5-2 win over WTM at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.

Zraunig had a hat trick for FCHA with Desmond Drake and Nolan Kalinowski also finding the net. 

Sam Bucala, Carter Schloat  and Nico Siano each had an assist.

Wayde Bardwell was in net for the victory.

FCHA Pee Wee Green 8, Holy Name Sousa 4 – Matt Garvin scored  four goals with Cooper Smith adding three more in the win for FCHA at Olympia Ice Center on Sunday. 

Porter Hall added another goal for FCHA.

Luca Siano had two assists with Gigi Grima adding another helper. 

Jay McGinnis stopped 17 shots. Anson Prunier and Jack Laurie led the defense. 

Liberty Tax Service FCHA Bantam Green 6, Westfield  3 –  FCHA picked up a win over Westfield in GSL 14U North Division action at Collins-Moylan Arena on Sunday.

Hunter Smith distributed effectively with five assists.  

Trevor Kuchieski led the offensive charge with three goals with an assists. Eathon Bryant added a goal and an assist. Will Miskovich and Matt Lavoine also scored. 

Will Cowie made 18 saves in net to pick up the win.

Ludlow 2, Liberty Tax Service 0 –  Cowie made 32 saves but FCHA was shut out on Saturday at Smead Arena in Springfield. 

Dylan Archer, Miskovich and Jayson Smith led the defense.
