Get rid of bulky waste Saturday

WHATELY — Tires, appliances, scrap metal, furniture, and other large objects can be discarded at the Christian Lane Transfer Station Saturday during Franklin County Solid Waste District’s “Clean Sweep” Bulky Waste Recycling Day.

Other drop off locations throughout the region are at the Buckland Recreation Facility, 66 Ashfield Road, and Northfield’s Highway Garage, 49 Caldwell Road.

Any district town resident can drop off items, but most have a cash only disposal fee ranging from $5 to about $40.

Items including mattresses, carpeting, construction debris, computers, televisions, electronics, microwaves, barbecue grills, tanks, will be accepted. Clean textiles and books, in bags, will also be accepted for recycle or reuse.

Notably, doors must be removed from refrigerator and freezers. Yard waste, brush, tree stumps, asbestos paint, auto batteries, oil tanks, hazardous materials, and trash will not be accepted.

Participating towns are Bernardston, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Conway, Deerfield, Erving, Gill, Hawley, Heath, Leverett, Leyden, Montague, New Salem, Northfield, Orange, Rowe, Shelburne, Sunderland, Warwick, Wendell, and Whately.
