GREENFIELD — After several years of dormancy, the Blooming Greenfield program is back beautifying Main Street this summer.

Through Blooming Greenfield, businesses can sponsor a whiskey barrel that is then placed outside of their location and tended to by volunteers. A $75 fee covers the cost of the whiskey barrel itself, as well as soil and mulch.

“All the planting is done by volunteers with their own time, energy, and they pay for the plants and they use their own creativity,” said Kathleen Kenny, the leader of the effort.

Twenty barrels were sponsored this summer. Next year, Kenny hopes to have 40, which she said was typical for the project about 15 years ago.

“I think it looks great,” she said. “I think it’ll look even better next year with 20 more.”

Kenny said she got a large response when she put out a call on social media seeking volunteers, showing the community’s support.

“Whenever I’m out watering or deadheading flowers, I always have people thanking me and asking me about how they could do something,” Kenny said. “I think it’s a great little project, and I’d like to carry it through to fall and a holiday project.”

The barrels that Kenny designed and is tending to can be found outside the Post Office and on the median strip on Main Street. The latter contains red geraniums, white petunias and blue lobelias.
