SPRINGFIELD — New England supermarket chain Big Y, which has stores in many Franklin and Hampshire county communities, is temporarily closing its delis due to a mass recall of commonly sold products from Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc.

Shortly after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service announced on Friday that Boar’s Head would recall all liverwurst products due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, Big Y stated that all delis would be temporarily closed to destroy all potentially affected products. Boar’s Head is also recalling other products produced on the same line as the liverwurst as they may also be impacted.

Big Y will be following recommendations by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service by sanitizing all surfaces, eliminating all recalled products, and throwing out any open meats or cheeses in the delis. Customers who may have already bought these products are urged by the Food Safety and Inspection Service to throw them away and not consume them. They should also thoroughly clean their refrigerators to eliminate the risk of cross-contamination.

“We have stopped shipment into our stores on any products of concern at this time,” John Fraro, senior director of fresh foods at Big Y, said in a statement Friday afternoon. “We are taking these steps out of an abundance of caution for our customers’ safety. To make sure we are breaking the supply chain, we will also be disposing of all product that may have come in contact with the affected products. We will continue to be vigilant and take precautions to prevent future incidents.”

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis if consumed. Listeriosis is a serious infection that can cause a fever, muscle aches and stiffness, headaches, confusion and disorientation, and convulsions sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal issues. Those at the highest risk are pregnant individuals, individuals ages 65 or older, and immunocompromised individuals.

Those in a higher-risk category who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming contaminated food are advised to seek medical care. Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics.

The ready-to-eat liverwurst products being recalled were produced between June 11 and July 17. According to a statement from Big Y, the liverwurst product subject to recall is the 3.5-pound loaves in plastic casing, or various weight packages sliced in retail delis, containing “Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst MADE IN VIRGINIA,” with sell-by dates ranging from July 25 to Aug. 30 printed on the side of the packaging.
