CHARLEMONT — If all goes as planned, the owners of the Berkshire East Mountain Resort will soon own and operate the Catamount Ski Area in Hillsdale, N.Y./South Egremont area.

According to a news release put out by both ski resorts, the sale is expected to close this month.

“Our experience at Berkshire East has proven it is possible to transition a ski area in the Berkshires into a dynamic adventure-based, four season resort,” Berkshire East owner Jon Schaefer said. He pointed out that, with 10 years of investment and development at Berkshire East, that ski area has become a four-season resort for mountain biking and zip lining, whitewater rafting, a long mountain coaster and — according to Yankee Magazine — a top wedding venue.

“It is our intent to introduce most of these activities at Catamount within the next two years,” said Schaefer, in the news release. “We also intend to renovate the existing main lodge and build a new lodge in the base area during the summer of 2018.”

Catamount, in the Berkshire Mountains, straddles the Massachusetts/New York border on roughly 385 acres. Catamount’s 36 trails cover about 100 acres of terrain. Summer operations there include an aerial adventure park with self-guided tree-top courses and zip lines.

With its wind turbine and solar energy-generation, Berkshire East is now powered 100 percent by energy generated on-premises.
