TURNERS FALLS — As the 31 members of Turner Falls High School’s Class of 2023 received their diplomas on Friday, thunderous cheers filled the gymnasium, a testament to the graduates’ four years of achievements and their communal impact.

Principal Christopher Barnes opened the ceremony by addressing the intimacy and significance of small schools. Barnes began by mentioning the student-given nicknames of teachers and staff as a fundamental example of the strong bonds that have formed at the school, and then listed the achievements this connection fosters.

“Our ability to know our students, to make connections and to respond to their needs is one of our greatest strengths at Turners Falls High School,” Barnes said, “and I believe the students know this.”

Barnes ended his speech by quoting Yoda from the “Star Wars” franchise, using the metaphor of The Force to illustrate the life-changing power of connections that Barnes hopes the graduates will continue to cultivate as they move onto a new life chapter.

“Every connection and every bit of positive energy you create will contribute to the force,” he said. “You will be a jedi and an agent of change.”

Both Class President Nikolas Martin and Valedictorian Madison LeBorgne recounted shared memories from a class trip to Paris and Rome, victories from a water balloon toss, and multiple years of musical chairs and senior sunrise.

Superintendent Brian Beck addressed graduates’ difficult journey through the pandemic. In spite of the abrupt change to remote classes for almost a year and a half of high school, Beck noted the graduates’ sense of community and school service, state and district athletic titles and Seal of Biliteracy awards.

“But what stands most out to me about the qualities and characteristics of this graduating class is both your individual and collective resilience,” Beck said. “You have all displayed at such a young age grit, determination and perseverance that you often see in the most amazing human beings.”
