FITCHBURG — An early deficit didn’t hamper the West field hockey team in the Bay State Games bronze medal match Sunday at Game On. The West took down Metro, 3-2.

Metro struck first, but Sarah Kreibel (Agawam) and Grace Rajpold (East Longmeadow) answered with consecutive tallies to take the lead.

Metro knotted the game at 2. Then Ava Gile (East Longmeadow) slotted the West winner.

Pioneer’s Riley Thayer accrued three goals and an assist over the weekend, while Greenfield’s McKenzie Boswell tapped in a goal.

Franklin Tech’s Henley Gilstrap represented the Southeast region, which finished fifth.

Girls volleyball

The West girls volleyball team finished fifth at the Bay State games over the weekend at Game On.

They went 2-6 in pool play, defeating Metro 25-14, 26-24 on Saturday. That set up a challenge match against Coastal for a spot in the semifinal bracket Sunday. Coastal prevailed 25-17.

Frontier Regional’s Ariana Miller, Gabrielle Adams and Allie Pierce participated, while Redhawks assistant Courtney Parent coached the team.
