SUNDERLAND — Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos believes his department has found the SUV driven by a man who allegedly tried to abduct a young woman on River Road on Sunday.

Demetropoulos said police are now attempting to identify and contact the vehicle’s owner to further the investigation. He stressed the owner/operator is at this time not a suspect, only a person of interest wanted for questioning. He also said his department has video footage of this SUV driving down a road, but not of the alleged attempted abduction.

“It’s the closest-looking model to the description that we received,” Demetropoulos said of a screenshot of the vehicle in the video footage. “We’re pretty confident that this is the vehicle involved.”

Demetropoulos said the woman, whom he described as “college age,” will be shown photographs of various SUVs to determine if any of them look familiar to her.

According to a press release from the Sunderland Police Department, a woman running with her dog on River Road (Route 47, south of central Sunderland) around 9 a.m. Sunday reported being approached by a man in a “brownish” SUV, who told her to “get in,” and then left his vehicle and approached her on foot. The release states she continued running and yelled, “No.” Another car was approaching, and the man got back in the vehicle and left, according to the release.

The woman said the man had a prominent facial bone structure and very short hair, and was possibly wearing a red shirt and light-colored pants. The SUV was last seen heading south on Route 47 in Sunderland, the release states.

Demetropoulos encourages anyone with relevant information to contact Sunderland Police at 413-665-7036. The after-hours phone number is 413-625-8200.
