ATHOL — An Athol man charged in connection with a November 2022 shooting has been determined too dangerous to release.
Yamil C. Nunez, 47, of Athol, was ordered held without bail on Friday in Orange District Court.
Nunez pleaded not guilty on Feb. 3 to the following charges: armed assault with intent to murder; assault and battery by means of a firearm; two counts of assault by means of a dangerous weapon; unlawful carrying of a firearm; unlawful possession of ammunition; unlawful possession of a loaded firearm; and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
The charges stem from an incident that took place Nov. 25, 2022, when Nunez allegedly shot a man in the head and neck inside a residence on Pine Street in Athol, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. Nunez and the victim knew each other prior to the incident. The victim was treated for his injuries at Athol Hospital and later transferred to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He has since been discharged and is recovering.
After an investigation by Athol Police with assistance from the DA’s office, police obtained an arrest warrant for Nunez on Jan. 31. They located him in Greenfield two days later and placed him under arrest. Nunez was detained since his arraignment last week and will remain in custody until his next court date of April 11.
