Criminal investigation launched after woman’s body found in Athol

ATHOL — Local and state police are investigating the death of a woman in her 20s, whose body was found early Monday morning near the Athol Wastewater Treatment Plant on Jones Street.

The body was discovered near the entrance to the treatment plant, which is surrounded by woods near a densely populated area and abuts the Millers River.

Jointly, the Athol Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office have launched a criminal investigation.

The woman’s official cause of death will be determined by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities have not yet released her identity.

No further information is available at this time. ​
