ASHFIELD — The First Congregational Church and St. John’s Episcopal Church will host a “Sacred Stroll” as an early Earth Day celebration on Friday, April 21, at 4 p.m.

“Our two Ashfield churches are working together to encourage care for our planet,” said the Rev. Vicki Ix, vicar at St. John’s Episcopal Church. “For Earth Day, because Ashfield has so many wonderful trails, we will repeat an activity that we began in 2022 to host a hike to mark our commitment to climate awareness.”

The event, to be held rain or shine, will consist of a group hike and time for sharing and reflection. The hike will start at the overlook at Bear Swamp Reservation off Hawley Road in Ashfield. There will be a walk up the road to the overlook where participants can hike through the surrounding trails or enjoy the view there. There will be a gathering at 4:30 p.m. for prayers, poetry and reflections by the picnic tables. All are invited to bring a poem or share a short reflection fitting for the occasion.

Event organizer Susan Todd said the churches are excited to host this outdoor event because residents have a lot of respect for the Ashfield environment and the landscape. She described the event at “exhilarating,” because it marks the beginning of the season where people can enjoy being outdoors.

“Here in Ashfield, we have a very aware community,” said the Rev. David Jones, minister at the First Congregational Church. “Members and friends of both churches understand that we need to change our habits, conserve our resources, and heal the damage that we have already done to the Earth and all its inhabitants. A Sacred Stroll will be a chance to come together, pay tribute to the Earth and give thanks for all the blessings we enjoy.”
