Massachusetts artist Irene Stapleford has a showing of current paintings on display at McCusker's Market in Shelburne Falls. The market is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Stop by for fresh organic produce, locally made honey and cider vinegar, and check out “Blue Skies, Modest Gains,” a showing of 33 paintings on panel by the artist in the adjoining seating area.
A former resident of Wilbraham and South Portland, Maine, Stapleford currently resides in West Concord. She finds inspiration in the New England landscape, memory, and dreams.
Color is central to the mood and emotional resonance of each painting. Abstract forms and patterns are juxtaposed with dream iconography, the organic geometry of tree branches, birds in flight or perched on branches, and vintage imagery. Washy, translucent glazes of acrylic create layered atmospheres of subtle, vibrating color and patterns of dots, stripes, or triangles.
Stapleford has been influenced by her graphic design work, finding much to explore in the intersection of paint and image manipulation software. To see more artwork, visit irenestapleford.com, wantknot.etsy.com, and follow Irene on Instagram @irene.stapleford.
An opening reception hosted by the artist will be held Saturday, June 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. and will feature Anthony Fuscaldo playing gypsy jazz, Blue Skies, bossa nova and pop favorites on guitar.
