COLRAIN — Police say no foul play is suspected in the case of a body that was found by the bank of a river on Jacksonville Road Wednesday night.

On a residential, wooded area behind a single-family house, firefighters and crime scene investigators walked into the brush down a steep slope to the edges of the North River to retrieve a body at approximately 6 p.m.

Under the glow of flashlights, firefighters pulled a basket through the woods and used what appeared to be a chain saw to extricate the deceased.

The cause of death is still under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police. Suicide is also not suspected, according to Colrain Police Sgt. Christopher Lannon.

A neighbor discovered the body and called the police at 4 p.m. According to authorities on the scene, it is still undetermined how long the body had been outside before the police arrived.

A trooper from the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section was on the scene photographing the body and the home in front of where the deceased was discovered.

No one came to the door when a reporter from The Recorder knocked on the door of the closest home, but a “Gone Fishing” sign hung near the door.

The Colrain EMS, the Colrain Fire Department and Colrain Police were in snowy, frigid weather for at least two hours during the investigation.

According to Lannon, the next of kin had not yet been notified and the deceased’s identity has not yet been confirmed.
