SHUTESBURY — Two people were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after a head-on crash on Route 202 early Thursday morning.

Emergency personnel from Shutesbury, New Salem and Amherst responded to the 4:34 a.m. collision close to the New Salem town line. Shutesbury Police Chief Walter Tibbetts said there was only one occupant in each vehicle — a 2013 Mazda 5 and a 2004 Ford Focus — adding that one person had to be extracted using the Jaws of Life, but wouldn’t comment on the extent of either occupant’s injuries.

The road was closed for about 90 minutes during the response. No further information was released to the press. The state police will continue to investigate the accident.
