TURNERS FALLS — Hillside Plastics, a company best known locally for its maple syrup containers and that has been operating in Montague for 22 years, announced Monday it has been sold to a New Hampshire-based company.

Carr Management Inc., a specialized manufacturer of blow-molded, high-density polyethylene bottles for dairy, water, food and industrial purposes, is headquartered in Nashua, N.H., and also has operations in California, Kentucky, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maine.

According to a news release announcing the sale Monday, Hillside President Peter Haas will continue in his role as president of the company while Kate (Haas) Colby, vice president of finance, will help for a period of time during the transition and then leave the company to spend more time with her family.

Hillside employs 150 people.

Both Hillside Plastics and Carr Management declined requests for further comment Monday.

According to the Franklin County Registry of Deeds, the property and buildings located on Millers Falls Road sold for $2,060,000 last Thursday.

In 2008, Hillside announced plans for a $1.5 million expansion that took place over three years, including an expanded parking area for storage trailers and a 30,000-square-foot addition to the then 40,000-square-foot factory that created about 75 new jobs.

In the news release Monday, Beth Muscato, CEO of CMI, said the company plans to invest in Hillside’s operations to service growing demand for its products. She said Hillside is an “outstanding fit” given its product offering, dedication to customer service and presence in growing end markets including food.

According to its website, Carr Management began in 1999 as a privately held company with three high-density polyethylene blow-molding facilities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. In 2012, it acquired Plastic Industries, a 30-year-old West Coast and Midwest high-density polyethylene blow-molder, giving the company six facilities spanning the United States.

“My family is confident that the decision to sell the business will enable further success and growth for the company in Turners Falls,” Peter Haas said in the news release. “Carr Management is a successful, well-managed, and growing company, with many similarities to Hillside, including a concern for the success of its employees, and a customer-centered, service-oriented business model. I look forward to continuing to help the company develop and grow in Turners Falls.”

Montague Town Planner Walter Ramsey commented on the sale, saying, “Hillside Plastics is one of the five largest employers in Montague and a prime demonstration of how a homegrown business can thrive in Franklin County. The Planning Department welcomes CMI to the business community and looks forward to further success and growth of the manufacturing facility in Montague.”
