GREENFIELD — Due to the strong winds and rain forecasted as part of Hurricane Henri this weekend, Stone Soup Café’s annual Harvest Supper, originally set for Sunday, has been canceled.

“It’s just not safe,” said Kirsten Levitt, executive director and chef of Stone Soup Café. “Even 20 mph wind with tents, it’s just not safe. After two hours of discussing it as a team, we’re just going to cancel.”

The supper — which was first organized in 2005 by Juanita Nelson — is an annual celebration of healthy, locally sourced food.

With three-quarters of the food already at Stone Soup Café, Levitt said canceling was a “horrific” decision to have to make.

“We’re going to have our volunteers for Saturday evening and for Sunday morning come in and help us process all of the remaining vegetables that have been donated, but the actual meal itself will be canceled,” she said. “We’re going to make sure we … continue to feed our community.”

Levitt said her team considered postponing the event by a month, but with numbers of COVID-19 cases spiking, they felt that wasn’t an option.

The weekly Saturday meal at Stone Soup Café will continue, she noted, with Saturday’s lunch incorporating the protein pre-cooked for the Harvest Supper.

“You can’t fight Mother Nature,” she said of the reason for canceling. “Mother Nature always wins.”
