GREENFIELD — Franklin County’s YMCA will host its annual Healthy Aging Fair, a free event dedicated to promoting wellness for adults ages 60 and up, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
This year’s fair will include free functional fitness assessments and a range of health screenings. To reserve a spot, register at the YMCA Welcome Center at 451 Main St. or call 413-773-3646, ext. 0.
The event will feature six targeted assessments led by certified YMCA exercise trainers, including upper and lower body strength, flexibility, aerobic endurance and balance tests. Each assessment totals about 20 minutes and provides participants with personalized feedback by comparing results to national fitness benchmarks. Trainers will review results and offer individualized guidance on enhancing fitness.
“This fair has become a trusted event for our senior community, connecting them with fitness and health resources for a well-rounded, informative experience,” Health and Wellness Director Jayne Trosin said in a statement. “With the support of local service vendors, we are excited to offer flu and COVID vaccines, blood pressure checks, balance and hearing tests, and even relaxing chair massages.”
YMCA CEO Grady Vigneau emphasized the role of fitness in healthy aging.
“Often, the feeling of aging is more about inactivity than age itself,” Vigneau said in a statement. “Many seniors are joining or rejoining the YMCA to build strength, endurance and a sense of community. Our Y supports over 1,000 senior members with activities ranging from swimming and water classes to group exercise, strength training and pickleball.”
Through the Prescribe the Y program, developed in partnership with local physicians, the YMCA has created various fitness options for seniors, with access to the pool, Fit Life Center and classes such as yoga, tai chi and cycling.
This year’s Healthy Aging Fair is sponsored by Lively Builders and the Franklin District Medical Society. The vaccine clinic is provided by Baystate Franklin Medical Center. For more information, visit your-y.org/events.
