AMHERST — An Amherst man was arrested on drug charges Friday afternoon after police discovered a large-scale marijuana growing operation at a home near the Leverett town line.

Police arrested Ian Henry Saylor, 30, of 599 East Leverett Road, on charges of possession and cultivation of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of hash oil, and unlawful manufacture of hash oil, Amherst detective Marcus Humber said.

Saylor was held on $500 cash bail pending his arraignment in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown on Monday.

Officers responded to the residence for an unrelated call and observed a significant amount of marijuana plants growing inside and outside the rental home, Humber said.

Humber said officers located at least 500 marijuana plants in various stages of growth.

An unknown amount of cash also was recovered from the scene where police confiscated grow lights and other equipment related to the production of marijuana.

The case remains under investigation.
