GREENFIELD — It didn’t take long for the Greenfield Post 81 Senior American Legion team to get its bats going against Westfield Post 124 on Wednesday.

After struggling to hit in a 2-1 loss to Westfield earlier in the summer, Post 81 didn’t have any issue at the plate on Wednesday as 10 different Greenfield players recorded hits.

Post 81 scored five runs in the first inning, three in the second and five in the fourth to pull away with a 14-1 victory in five innings at Vets Field.

“Westfield is a better team than that,” Greenfield coach Alex Siano said. “They didn’t have their full roster so you have to take that with a grain of salt. We hit the ball really well tonight and a lot of kids got in and played. Some of our younger kids got to play who normally don’t and some kids got to see different situations. It was a good opportunity for those kids to contribute and a lot of them did.”

Ben Werner pitched the opening four innings for Post 81, striking out two, scattering four hits and walking two.

Braeden Tsipenyuk pitched the fifth inning and didn’t allow a hit.

“We got a great pitching performance from Ben,” Siano said. “He only pitched one inning in the first game but he was really sharp tonight. We didn’t use a lot of pitching tonight and we have a lot of games in a short amount of time. That will help us.”

Westfield opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning but it was all Post 81 from there.

Tsipenyuk led off the bottom of the first with a double, Jackson Campbell knocked a hit to right field before Logan Moore — who went 4-for-4 on the day — cracked a base hit to left to drive Tsipenyuk in to tie the game.

An error after Werner put the ball in play allowed Campbell to score, Caleb Thomas blasted a hit up the middle to drive Moore and Werner — who each advanced a base on a balk — in. Later in the inning Thomas scored on a double steal after the throw to get Arthur Fitzpatrick at second wasn’t in time, giving Greenfield a 5-1 lead going into the second.

The hits kept coming there. Campbell put down a well-placed bunt to reach with one out, Ethan Mauthe knocked a single and Moore followed with a single to score Campbell.

Thomas singled to score Mauthe before an error off a ball put in play by Luca Siano brought Moore in, giving Post 81 an 8-1 lead after two.

Greenfield didn’t produce a run in the third but its bats got going again in the fourth. Moore led off the inning with a single, Werner reached on an error before Thomas singled to load the bases.

Moore scored on a wild pitch before Werner was thrown out at home after Fitzpatrick put the ball in play. Ben Caron singled to knock in Thomas and Tsipenyuk then singled to score Fitzpatrick, giving Post 81 an 11-1 lead.

Michael Pierce came in and smashed a double to deep right-center, scoring Caron and Tsipenyuk. Moore recorded his fourth hit of the game by knocking Pierce in with a single to give Post 81 its 14-1 lead.

Along with solid pitching, Greenfield made numerous plays in the field. Alex Siano highlighted two infielders who had strong games both at the plate and with their gloves on Wednesday.

“Logan Moore and Caleb Thomas had great games defensively,” Siano said.
