GREENFIELD — Providing a 24/7 ride service, American Knight Transportation owner and operator Richard Haste prides himself on being focused on the community and his customers — hence his business’ tagline “where the professionals drive and customers reign.”

Haste, a Bronx native and Navy veteran who now operates his business at 357 Main St., picked the name “American Knight Transportation” because of the pride he takes in being a veteran, as well as the “royalty treatment and customer service” the business provides.

“It’s patriotic, chivalrous, it’s also a play on having a ‘night out on the town,’” explained Haste, who has been working in transportation for 37 years.

The company moved from South Hadley to Greenfield in November, which Haste said is because he started dating a Greenfield resident.

“My location doesn’t really matter,” he said. “I can be mobile, but I came here because I like the community, so I went brick and mortar.”

He was strategic in that he wanted to be on a major street with parking spots and in area with high foot traffic.

“I’m near the theater, the YMCA, the library and Brad’s (Place), so I see a lot of opportunity for my business and others,” Haste said.

To get service, riders call into the office, where a ride is dispatched. The business sports eight vehicles including limousines, SUVs and sedans.

“We prefer appointments if you know ahead of time, as well as from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m., but during the day, you can call and get a ride,” Haste said.

Currently, the rate for a ride in Greenfield is $6 from one point to another within the city. Out of town, it’s $3 per mile. The rates for longer distances are negotiable, Haste said. However, there are no limits to where the company is willing to drive.

American Knight is having a special for the month of February, which is $150 for a three-hour limo service. There is also a special where two to eight people can get a limo ride to the Garden Cinemas for its Oscars event on Sunday.

“We want to be part of the community,” Haste said. “I want people to feel comfortable with us. Come stop in and say, ‘Hi.’”
