GREENFIELD — An outpatient medical practice for substance use disorder opened on Monday at the Cherry Rum Plaza on Bernardston Road.

The site is SaVida Health’s fifth medication-assisted treatment center in Massachusetts, and its only one in Franklin County.

“We’re very pleased to be coming to Greenfield,” said Chief Operating Officer Sharon Shepard. “It’s a community I’m fond of and have relatives in the area, and I think it’s an important place to bring care.”

That’s because Greenfield is the “hub” of Franklin County, she said — which is another reason that SaVida Health chose the city for its new treatment center.

“We are so pleased to bring another option to the Greenfield area for patients seeking recovery,” said Dr. Suzanne Smith, the Greenfield site’s medical director. “Our goal is to help people reclaim their lives with effective medical treatment focusing on each person’s individual needs.”

Other addiction treatment centers in Greenfield include CleanSlate Outpatient Addiction Medicine on Arch Street, the Northern Hope Center on Federal Street and Health Care Resource Centers Greenfield on Shelburne Road.

Shepard said the SaVida Health approach is “comprehensive,” focusing on harm reduction and offering an integrated approach to care.

“Some people just provide medication, but we offer patients other services,” she said.

In addition to prescribing Food and Drug Administration-approved medications, licensed staff can also offer psych med management, medical care and counseling, she said. The idea is to also provide support for co-occurring illnesses such as depression or anxiety.

“We meet patients where they’re at,” Shepard said.

She said this approach is especially important in the midst of the current public health crisis.

“We have a pandemic,” she said. “But we also have an epidemic.”

SaVida Health is following all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for COVID-19 safety, she said. The center is also offering telehealth services to those who prefer that over an in-person visit.

“We never judge anybody,” she said. “We treat addiction as a disease and really help patients to find a path to recovery, recognizing it’s a relapsing disease as well.”

Savida Health currently has locations in West Springfield, Worcester, Pittsfield and North Adams, as well as at various locations in Vermont, Maine, Virginia and Delaware.
