GREENFIELD — Dollar General Corp. says its store at 369 Federal St. has been so well received since opening in 2013 that the retail chain decided to open a second location in the Big Y plaza.

The new store at 10 Colrain Road is now open, with plans for an official grand opening to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with free prizes and special deals.

The store replaces a Family Dollar location that closed earlier this year. Dollar General acquired the spot as part of the company’s asset acquisition from Dollar Express LLC, according to a news release from the company in July.

Laura Somerville, a spokeswoman for Dollar General, said this week that the corporation has a policy of not disclosing store progress or sales figures on an individual basis, but said making sure customers’ needs are met is a top priority when choosing store locations.

“The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice,” she said in an email. “We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a 3- to 5-mile radius, or 10-minute drive.

“We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration,” she added.

Dollar General stores typically employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on the need. Anyone who would like to apply for a job can visit the “Careers” section at

“Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a wide assortment of merchandise and great prices on quality products,” said Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “We hope our area customers will enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location.”

The first 50 adult shoppers at the 10 Colrain Road store during Saturday’s grand opening will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card and the first 200 will get a Dollar General tote bag with complimentary product samples, among other giveaways.

Dollar General, headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tenn., sells name-brand and private brand merchandise such as health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal items and basic clothing. The company also sells an assortment of packaged foods, as well as some refrigerated foods and frozen foods.
