Charles R. Herzig

Colrain, MA – Charles R. Herzig 65, passed on September 19th at Baystate Hospital in Springfield. He was born 5/26/1961 in Montague to Robert and Ruth (Palmer) Herzig. Charlie spent much of his youth in the Canaan, CT area with his mother before moving to Colrain to live with his Father and Grandmother Nellie so he could attend Franklin County Technical School. He graduated there in 1979.

Married on May 31, 1986 to Karen (Coombs) Herzig, they were able to celebrate their 40th anniversary this year.

Charlie worked on Coop for his years at Tech at American Photographic Appliance Corporation until its closing. He then was employed at Bete Fog Nozzle in Greenfield for the next 20 years until a stroke took away his ability to work and speak.

An avid fisherman, he enjoyed going to the Fathers Day Derby on Lake Champlain for many years with his Dad. He also enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and couldn’t wait until spring came so he could ride his Can Am Spyder and tour the neighboring states. His help on his wife’s family farm was invaluable throughout their marriage, especially when they took over in 2005 until his health failed in 2022.

Charlie is survived by his wife Karen, his son Eric C. Herzig and his wife Stephanie and his 3 grandsons who were his pride and joy – Cooper, Brody and Owen. He also leaves a sister Tammy (Lee) Wheeler, brother in law Rusty (Kim) Coombs, his mother in law, his niece and nephew and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Robert and his mother Ruth.

There will be no calling hours. There will be a graveside service at The West Branch Cemetery in Colrain on Saturday, October 17 at 11:00am with a reception to follow after at the Colrain Community Church. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation or The American Heart Association.

The family would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Nurses, CNAs, aides and staff at Linda Manor for watching over him and caring for him as he struggled through the last 4 years recovering from his stroke. We are so thankful for the care, dignity, respect and friendship they gave to Charlie and our families.
