Gill, MA – David E. “Hawkeye” Hawkins, a lifelong resident of Gill, MA, died September 28, 2026 at his home with his family. He was born on October 26, 1958 in Greenfield, MA, the son of Edward A. and Alice M. (Annear) Hawkins. David was a graduate of Turners Falls High School, Class of 1976.
David married his wife Patricia A. (Mahaney) at the Gill Church on September 30, 1978.
He worked most of his life at the Esleeck Paper Mill in Turners Falls.
Besides his wife of forty eight years, Pat, David leaves a son, James W. Hawkins and his partner Cassie Putnam; his daughter, Krysten Grant; his grandchildren, Morgan, Caylin, Brantley and Rylan Hawkins; and his step grandchildren, Jackson and Savannah Putnam and Nathan Grant. David also leaves behind his sisters, Kathy J. St. Germain (Charles) and JoAnn Stafford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
David was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He spent a lot of time in the woods after deer, turkey, pheasant, partridge and bear.
David enjoyed vacation in Wells Beach, Maine every year with his family. Thanks to Doug (a Maine lobsterman) he had a lot of fun hauling in lobster. He enjoyed striper fishing with his son, grandsons, nephews and many friends. He also enjoyed kayaking and moose sighting in the White Mountains.
David was predeceased by nephews Chad Stafford, Sean Williams, Peter St. Germain and many good friends.
Per David’s wishes, there will be no services. The family will hold a Celebration of David’s Life on October 24, 2026 at 1pm at their home in Gill.
