GREENFIELD — Speeding through a construction zone early Sunday morning resulted in the arrest of two Vermonters for charges related to drugs, alcohol and fireworks.

Victoria Thompson, 28, of Cavendish, Vt., and Marshall Gagne, 41, of Springfield, Vt., were taken into custody and each held on $75,000 bail. Thompson was set to be arraigned in Greenfield District Court for possession of a Class B drug, trafficking in heroin, conspiracy to violate drug law, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, illegal possession of fireworks, possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle and speeding, while Gagne faces charges of possession of a Class A drug, trafficking in heroin, conspiracy to violate drug law and providing a false name to police.

According to a Massachusetts State Police press release, troopers Scott Boutell and Daniel Carmody were patrolling Interstate 91 in Greenfield at around 2 a.m. on Sunday when they saw a blue Toyota sedan entering a construction zone at 70 mph. The speed limit is 55 mph.

The troopers activated their cruiser’s blue lights and stopped the vehicle near Exit 50, according to the release. They approached the vehicle and identified Thompson as the driver, with a 31-year-old passenger later identified as Gagne. While speaking to the occupants, Boutell observed a large illegally possessed firework in the rear seat area.

Carmody returned to the cruiser to conduct an electronic inquiry of the occupants and learned Thompson’s driver’s license was invalid. She was arrested, then seated in the rear of the cruiser, the release states. Gagne was removed from the vehicle for it to be towed.

While conducting a required inventory search of the vehicle’s contents prior to it being towed, the troopers discovered what was described as a large amount of narcotic paraphernalia, along with a small amount of a substance suspected to be crystal methamphetamine, the release states. A search of the trunk yielded what was described as a large amount of individually packaged baggies of a substance suspected to be heroin. The seized narcotics were later weighed at approximately 80 grams.

At this point, Gagne was also arrested. According to the release, he initially provided troopers with a false name and date of birth. It was learned Gagne had an extraditable warrant for his arrest out of Vermont.

Thompson and Gagne were both transported to the Shelburne Falls State Police barracks for booking.
