COLRAIN — While there are no candidates on the ballot to fill Mike Slowinski’s Selectboard seat, Emily Thurber has announced a write-in campaign to fill the position.

The election is set for Tuesday, May 2. Polls will be open from noon to 7 p.m. at the Town Office.

While introducing herself to prospective voters at a meet-and-greet held at Griswold Memorial Library last week, Thurber said she has lived in town for 10 years, during which time she has met a lot of Colrain residents while working at the Catamount Country Store.

“It is amazing how community-minded everyone is here,” Thurber said.

At 35, Thurber said she has never served on a board or committee in town, but she believes having younger people involved in town government is key to resolving current issues. For example, she said she understands the motivations of the younger generation of workers.

“I would really love to see how we can better recruit employees and retain them long-term,” she said.

Thurber said her main goal, should she be elected, is to follow those who are already setting a good example for the town, like the library, Fire Department and EMS.

“They work as a great team,” she said. “I would love to see all the other boards and committees work as smoothly as they do.”

Thurber said she has attended Selectboard meetings regularly for the past year. In doing so, she became interested in the process.

“I have a good feel for what our community members want and also for what [the town] needs, and I am always looking for ways I can contribute,” she said. “I am very civic-minded and believe I have the energy and the passion to do the job well.”

The remaining positions on the ballot, which are all uncontested, are as follows:

■Library trustee — Cheli Mennella, incumbent.

■Library trustee — Cynthia McLaughlin, incumbent.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly described Jonathan Lagreze’s run for the constable position. This is Lagreze’s first time running for the position, which is currently held by Scott Sullivan. Greenfield Road resident Kevin Worden is also running a write-in campaign for the constable seat.
