GILL — One person was killed and two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 2 near Barton Cove on Friday afternoon.

First Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Steven Gagne confirmed the death at around 7 p.m. on Friday.

According to Assistant District Attorney Andrew Covington, the crash occurred at around 4 p.m. when a vehicle heading westbound on Route 2 crossed over into the eastbound lane, causing a head-on collision with a vehicle traveling in the other direction.

Two occupants had to be removed from the vehicles using extrication equipment, according to Gill Fire Chief Gene Beaubien. Although first responders had requested a medical helicopter, there wasn’t one available. Beaubien said Northfield EMS transported all three people in separate ambulances.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield and was pronounced dead. Two others — the westbound driver and the front-seat passenger from the eastbound vehicle — were injured during the crash, according to Covington.

“State Police detectives assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office as well as troopers with the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating the cause of the crash,” Covington wrote in an email. No charges have been filed.

First responders came from Northfield, Gill, Bernardston and Greenfield, Beaubien said. Massachusetts State Police also assisted.

Route 2 was closed for several hours after the crash.
