GREENFIELD — State and local police are investigating an accident on Bernardston Road (Route 5) Thursday afternoon that resulted in the death of a 59-year-old Northfield woman.

Brenda Louise Perrea was the victim of the single-vehicle crash, according to Laurie Loisel, communication and outreach director for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. There were no passengers involved.

Loisel said the accident involved a possible health incident. The official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer.

According to Greenfield Deputy Police Chief William Gordon, police responded at around 3:30 p.m. to the accident at the Interstate 91 overpass on Bernardston Road after the vehicle struck a bridge abutment.

While first responders were on scene, traffic was temporarily reduced to one lane at a time before reopening to two-way traffic.

The Greenfield Fire and Bernardston Police departments also responded.
