TURNERS FALLS — Joe Dulude II as “Mr. Drag” and the rest of his drag family return with a fresh take on the story of “A Christmas Carol” during Eggtooth Productions’ eighth annual holiday drag show called “Home for the Holi-gays” this weekend.
Performances will be held at the Shea Theater Arts Center on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
The yearly show was created by Dulude, who once worked as a Broadway makeup artist and costumer. Deciding he wanted to try being on stage himself, he created the character of “Mr. Drag,” who is described as “a martini-sipping drag queen who is, of course, immortal.”
Characters in “Home for the Holi-gays” take on the themes of “A Christmas Carol,” singing parodied songs to create a blend of musical theater and drag performance.
K Adler of Eggtooth Productions, who also plays Karl in the show, said a community of characters and a community around the show itself has formed over the years.
“You’ll get some of those familiar tropes in terms of visiting past, present and future,” Adler said of the presentation of “A Christmas Carol.” “But woven throughout are the opportunities for all these characters to express themselves and give a sense of both what’s happening on stage with this internal community and as a reflection on our external communities as well.”
This year, a unique element of the show is the live singing that is less prominent in drag performances compared to lip-syncing or the usual focus on costume design.
“The choreography, the singing, the acting, are of this higher caliber, and not just a variety show where it’s going from one thing to the next without cohesion,” Adler said. “There is this narrative link that brings it all together, and really does make a spectacular experience that I think is just unique to any straight play or any drag show.”

Dulude said putting together this show, using the narrative arc from “A Christmas Carol” while weaving the community created around Mr. Drag and the drag family of characters, was challenging.
“I also had to write with some of the other people in mind, because of their schedules,” Dulude noted. “So it was really a little bit more complicated than it usually is, but it ended up working out.”
Dulude mentioned he is excited about the inclusion on timely pop culture and social media references. As the former makeup artist for “Wicked” on Broadway, he alluded to references to the new “Wicked” movie in the show.
As the show draws near, Dulude said he looks forward to putting on the production while also holding space for the tradition it has created for the community. He recalled how one woman told him that this holiday show has become something her whole family can appreciate — something that he never expected.
“I was born in ’74 so I still have a lot of that baggage of being gay and coming out at that time, and just to hear that means so much to me,” Dulude said. “I think that’s the thing that surprised me the most is that everybody loves this. Everybody comes and has a good time. Families come, every generation comes and they just really have such a fun time.”
