SHELBURNE FALLS — With filming for the new 10-episode limited series of “Dexter” scheduled to start on Tuesday, town officials are encouraging drivers to avoid the village area.

“The film crew will be allowing traffic to pass (on the Iron Bridge), but there may be delays,” said Buckland Town Administrator Heather Butler, noting traffic on the bridge would be restricted, not closed. “We encourage people to avoid the village area as much as possible, especially if they are looking to get from Point A to Point B quickly.”

“Dexter,” a Showtime production, follows forensic analyst Dexter Morgan, who spends his days solving crimes and his nights committing them, according to a synopsis on the production company’s website. But the character lives by a “strict honor code” — acting as a vigilante serial killer.

The final episode of the original series, which lasted eight seasons, aired in 2013.

Some local businesses previously confirmed that Showtime had been in touch regarding the production process, and that they will be closed to allow for filming. McCusker’s Market at 3 State St., for example, plans to close from April 5 to April 9 and on April 12.

Likewise, the West End Pub at 16 State St. took to Facebook this week to announce it will be closed from April 5 to April 21 for filming. The pub is being disguised as the “Iron Lake Hotel and Tavern” for the series. According to the post, the setting of “Dexter” is “the little town of Iron Lake, New York.”

In a Friday newsletter, the Salmon Falls Gallery at 1 Ashfield St. announced it will be closed “for some or all of the filming to facilitate parking for the film crews and to be generally out of the way of all the hubbub. ... Our online store will be open 24/7 and we will be checking for your orders to ship out in a timely manner.”
