HAWLEY — The Sons and Daughters of Hawley will welcome attendees to the annual Hawley Day reunion on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is “kind of a mishmash of different things,” as described by Hawley Administrative Assistant Tinky Weisblat. It includes the annual election of officers for the Sons and Daughters of Hawley, a memorial service for members who died in the past year, lunch, games and tours of the town’s historic sites.

“It’s really a gem of an event and I wish more people in town would go,” she said.

Hawley Day was created by the Sons and Daughters of Hawley, the town’s historical society, as a way to celebrate their roots in town. Weisblat said Hawley reached its peak population in the late 1880s. By the 1900s, many folks had moved to Northampton and other surrounding communities, and they wanted to reminisce about their days in Hawley.

“They were thinking back on their time here and thought of what a wonderful place to live Hawley was, so they decided to come back for a day, and that became an annual tradition,” Weisblat said of the event’s early years.

Hawley Day will begin promptly at 10 a.m. with coffee and the Sons and Daughters of Hawley’s annual meeting. The memorial service will be held, then lunch will be served.

Weisblat said the family with the most members in attendance will win bragging rights. Families do not need to have historic ties to the town — they could have moved to Hawley recently — as long as they show up and show off their town spirit.

This year’s Hawley Day will also feature a celebration of the Cox family for their 101 years in town. Weisblat said family members are expected to show up in droves and they may win the family count.

After lunch, typical family reunion field games and tours of the Sons and Daughters of Hawley archives will be available. The day will end with a performance of the Hawley town song.

Hawley Day will be held at the East Hawley Meetinghouse near the intersection of Buckland Road and East Hawley Road. Weisblat advised, “Just drive up Hawley Road and you can’t miss it.”
