Deerfield Police Department, Massachusetts: We have had several calls into the station about BEARs. Remember they live here too and we can all get along. The bears just woke up from a long nap and they're hungry. They sniff out all kinds of food left in your trash and if they can get at it they will. They also love sweets, peanut butter cookies, and an occasional picnic basket. They should be no cause for alarm unless they try to come into your house. If that happens please dial 911, that part is no joke we have had a bear go into a house on Upper Road a few years back to eat the freshly made cookies. Just seeing a bear in your yard or taking down a bird feeder is normal behavior and you do not need to call 911. If you are concerned you can call us on our non-emergency line 413-665-2606, but just seeing a bear will not create a police response.
