Greenfield school board has competition in superintendent search

GREENFIELD — As the Greenfield School Committee begins searching for its next superintendent, it will do so along with nearly 40 other districts in Massachusetts, said the department’s attorney.

Peter Smith told the school board that according to Glenn Koocher, the executive director of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, “the pool of candidates is not great.”

“He felt ... that the candidates that were applying often did not have experience on the administrative level in terms of central office experience or running a district,” said Smith, “or were from outside Massachusetts and had no knowledge ... of the laws and the procedures in this commonwealth.”

And he said that some school districts, like Northampton, have already opened up a second search after not being satisfied with three finalists.

But Smith said that the school board could contract with the school committee association to help conduct the search. Smith said that Koocher told him he would personally assist Greenfield, working with the association’s superintendent search field director Patricia Correira.

“Having both of them, to me, is like having two David Ortizes in your lineup instead of one,” said Smith.

Mayor William Martin, chairman of the committee, said he would present detailed information at next week’s meeting about three potential superintendent search consultants.

School board members seem willing to consider out-of-state candidates. Superintendent Susan Hollins was working in New Hampshire when she was hired in 2008.

They also may consider internal candidates.

It is still unclear whether Hollins will serve the rest of this school year or if the committee will need to hire an interim leader soon. In her retirement letter, Hollins said she planned to fulfill her duties but would be open to an earlier end date — and no decision has yet been made.

The committee may revisit that issue at next week’s meeting.
